Em 2011, nascia o Programa de monitoramento e conservação das antas na Mata Atlântica Capixaba – o Pró-Tapir com a missão de promover ações de pesquisa e conservação das populações das antas na Mata Atlântica Capixaba e, além disso, elaborar um plano de conservação para a espécie na região.

O Pró-Tapir veio do sentimento de paixão e comprometimento com a pesquisa e conservação de uma pessoa, a bióloga Dra. Andressa Gatti. E logo ela encontrou outras pessoas com o mesmo comprometimento com as quais pudesse compartilhar o seu projeto de vida. Com tanto empenho, o Pró-Tapir logo se tornou um dos poucos, porém importante programa de conservação voltado a uma espécie ameaçada no estado do Espírito Santo.

A partir deste ano (2019), demos um grande passo: o de compreendermos que o Pró-Tapir cresceu e que agora possui uma cara nova e com grandes desafios. O passo foi internalizar que o slogan do Programa não é mais Monitoramento e Proteção das Antas da Mata Atlântica Capixaba, mas sim, Monitoramento e Proteção dos Ungulados da Mata Atlântica. Parece uma mudança sutil, não é mesmo? Mas para nós isso faz toda a diferença, pois além das antas, as queixadas, os catetos e os veados passaram a compor nossa lista de animais focais. Enquanto que a nossa abrangência já não é mais o Espírito Santo e sim,  a Mata Atlântica.

Esse grande passo só foi possível, porque nós sempre tivemos a sorte de ter muitos parceiros, que acreditam em nosso trabalho. Nosso muito obrigado a todos que colaboraram, os que colaboram e àqueles que logo abraçarão nosso sonho também!

In 2011 was born the Program of monitoring and conservation of tapirs in the Atlantic Forest of the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil – Pró-Tapir. Our mission is to assess the status of conservation and the viability of tapir populations in the Atlantic Forest of Espírito Santo, and prepare a conservation plan for the species in the region.

Pró-Tapir came from the sense of passion and commitment of one person to the research and conservation, the biologist  Dr. Andressa Gatti. Later, she found other people with the same commitment with which she could share her life project. With so much commitment, Pró-Tapir soon became one of the few, but important conservation programs of a threatened species in the state of Espírito Santo.

From this year onwards (2019), we took a big step: comprehending that Pró-Tapir has grown and now it has a new face and big challenges. The step was to understand that the program slogan is not Monitoring and Protection of the tapirs in the Atlantic Forest of Espírito Santo anymore, but also Monitoring and Protection of the ungulates in the Atlantic Forest. Sounds like a subtle change, right? To us, however, this makes all the difference, because, aside from the tapirs, the white-lipped peccaries, the collared peccaries and the deers started being on our focal species list.  Furthermore, our coverage is not only the state of Espírito Santo anymore, but the Atlantic Forest.
